Positive results expected from Caspian Sea summit: Rouhani

Irans President Hassan Rouhani has expressed hope that the 4th summit of the Caspian Sea littoral states would lead to acceptable outcomes.

At the summit of the Caspian Sea littoral states, we will have different topics [to discuss] with heads of the Caspian Sea littoral states and, God willing, we will achieve acceptable results, Rouhani said upon his arrival in the Russian port city of Astrakhan on Sunday.

The president was welcomed at the airport by Astrakhans local officials and staff of Irans embassy in Moscow.

During his two-day visit, President Rouhani is scheduled to deliver a speech at the 4th summit of the Caspian Sea littoral states and sign related documents, hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and attend an interview with Russia Today satellite television channel.

Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are the five littoral states of the Caspian Sea.

The last meeting of the Caspian Sea littoral states was held in the Azeri capital city of Baku in November 2010.

The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed body of water by area, and is variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea.

The issue of the Caspian Seas legal regime gained importance following the breakup of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the emergence of new independent states.
