Nitrate infiltration detected in Tehran drink water network

Nitrate infiltration detected in Tehran drink water network
TEHRAN, Aug. 17 (MNA) Head of Tehran City Council Committee on Health and Municipal Services says nitrate infiltration to the capitals drink water network is a serious issue.

Rahmatollah Hafezi told Mehr News that the undeveloped water and wastewater networks posed serious issues, one being nitrate infiltration to drink water networks. Occasional suspension of the activities in certain times of the year was a concern for Water and Wastewater officials; we believe that the office should minimize the limitations to accelerate the snail pace of the construction of water and wastewater network, he told Mehr News.

Other limitations than the occasional suspensions, wet seasons and unpaid debts to the Municipality districts also contribute to the slow pace of constructions. We held joint meetings with district water and wastewater officials for better mutual understanding, Hafezi added.

He cited nitrate infiltration to underground waters as a consequent of the lack of wastewater network development. Due to aging water supply networks, wastewater nitrate infiltrates to drink water networks, thus polluting the network occasionally; in addition, it would sink into the depths and come to surface in streets, said this official.

The development and renewal of water and wastewater networks could significantly reduce the costs for the government and taxpayers. With the current pace and capacities, completion of wastewater network would require 4-5 years, Hafezi said. Attempts have been made to irrigate southern Tehran crop plantations with healthy water previously irrigated with wastewater and the Tehrans Governorate looks over the issue, he asserted.

About the video footage going viral on social networks featuring chemicals free radicals detected in Tehrans water, Hafezi said that he had not seen the video, but objected that such experiments are not authentic and standard reference body to decide on water health.
