A senior Iranianofficialhas warned of the threat that growing extremism and terrorism pose for the global security and called for collective efforts to counter the scourges.Speaking at a Monday press conference in the Russian capital Moscow, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian highlighted the atrocities of Takfiri terrorists in Syria.
Basically, any action which leads to propping up extremism and terrorism is to the detriment of regional security and stability, and the global community should prevent certain parties from supporting terrorism in the region.
Today the al-Nusrah Front and ISIS (the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) are growing in Syria due to the financial and armed support of some countries and continuation of this process can lead to unsavory incidents at the regional and global level, he added.
The Iranianofficial called for collective efforts to help resolve the Syrian crisis and noted, Resolving the issue requires negotiations at the regional level.
Syria has been the scene of deadly violence since March 2011. Over 130,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the turmoil.
The Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - have been supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
Amir-Abdollahian pointed to the Geneva II talks on the Syrian crisis and noted that the Wests policies and the so-called oppositions insistence on forming a transitional government in the country were the main reasons for the failure of the talks.
The second round of talks between delegations representing the Syrian government and the foreign-backed opposition in the Swiss city of Geneva hit a deadlock on February 15 with both sides sticking to their positions.
The Syrian delegation said fighting terrorism should be the top priority, but the opposition insisted that formation of a transitional government and resignation of President Bashar al-Assad must come first.
