An Iranian parliamentary official says the upcoming Geneva II conference on the Syria crisis will yield no result without the Islamic Republics involvement.On Tuesday, Hossein Sheikholeslam, advisor to Iran Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani on international affairs, said, Irans presence in Geneva II can pave the way for the resolution of the crisis in Syria, stressing that no such meeting would yield result without Irans presence.
He also emphasized that Tehran would not accept any preconditions for taking part in the meeting, which is aimed at putting an end to nearly three years of foreign-backed unrest in Syria.
After several delays, the Geneva II meeting is scheduled to open in the Swiss city of Montreux, near Geneva, on January 22. The United States and the foreign-backed Syria opposition are against Irans participation in the negotiations.
Sheikholeslam made the comments after US Secretary of State John Kerry said on January 13 that Washington will support Irans participation in the Geneva II talks if the Islamic Republic agrees to the principles set out in the first round of talks on Syria in Geneva in June 2012.
The Iranian parliamentary official further stated that the United States and its Western allies should support Tehrans attendance in the Geneva II conference if they truly want the peace talks to be fruitful.
He also called for an immediate end to the ongoing bloodshed in Syria, stressing, If the crisis in Syria continues, the flames of war will definitely spread to neighboring countries.
The United Nations says more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced since the outbreak of the foreign-sponsored militancy in Syria in March 2011.
