Syria crisis needs political solution: Larijani

Syria crisis needs political solution: Larijani
Irans Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has emphasized the need for a political and negotiated settlement of the turmoil in Syria.
The ongoing crisis in Syria can be resolved only through negotiations, and political solution is the only way out of the crisis in the country, Larijani said in a meeting with Oman's ruler Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said in Muscat on Thursday.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. Statistics released by the United Nations show more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the conflict in the Arab country.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Larijani termed Tehran-Muscat relations as outstanding, brotherly and progressive.

The Omani ruler, for his part, said the settlement of the Syria crisis needs the cooperation of all countries.

He also hailed as an "important achievement the recent deal reached between Tehran and six world powers in Geneva over Tehrans nuclear energy program.

On November 24, Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the US -- plus Germany sealed an interim deal in the Swiss city of Geneva to lay the groundwork for the full resolution of the Wests decade-old dispute with Iran over its nuclear energy program.

As part of the deal, in exchange for Irans confidence-building bid to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities, some of the existing sanctions against the Islamic Republic would be lifted.
