Tehran, Oct 30, IRNA � Ali-Akbar Velayati was appointed as the head of Center for Strategic Research affiliated to the Expediency Council.�

IRNA reported that Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has appointed Velayati to the post and he will issue a decree to that effect in the next few days.


Velayati served as Advisor to the Supreme Leader on international affairs since 1997.

He used to serve as Iranian foreign minister for more than 16 years from 1981 to 1997. He is the first and only person that have held this position for more than ten years.

The Center for Strategic Research is a leading Iranian think-tank on strategy issues. It is the research arm of the Expediency Council.
