Syrian opposition sources say foreign-backed militants operating inside Syria have abducted lawmaker Mohanna Faisal al-Fayyad in the eastern part of the country.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Monday that the Arab lawmaker was kidnapped by the militants during clashes with members of his tribe who support the government of Syrias President Bashar al-Assad, in the Middle Eastern countrys eastern province of Deir Ezzor.

The observatory added that militants from the Ahrar al-Sham group, the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) abducted al-Fayyad on Sunday evening.

Earlier this month, a top intelligence officer was assassinated by the militants in the same province.

"Major General Jamaa Jamaa was martyred while carrying out his national duties to defend Syria and its people and pursuing terrorists in Deir Ezzor," state television said in a breaking news alert on October 17.

Jamaa was the head of military intelligence in the province, where Syrian troops have been battling militants seeking to topple the Syrian government.

On October 18, large crowds of Syrians held a massive funeral ceremony in Jamaas home village of Zama to honor the assassinated major general.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million others displaced due to the violence.
