British Foreign Secretary William Hague has described the first day of talks between Iran and six major world powers on Tehrans nuclear energy program as useful, saying that the negotiations present a real opportunity for progress.The first day of talks, which took place yesterday, between Iran and the E3+3 (five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany) was useful. It did turn out to be a day for serious discussion, Hague said on Wednesday.
Theres a real opportunity to make progress in these talks and I urge Iran to seize that opportunity both today and in the weeks to come, the British official added.
The new round of the negotiations between Iran and the six major world powers - Russia, China, Britain, France and the US plus Germany - began on Tuesday in the Swiss city of Geneva.
The first round was held in the morning, attended by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton.
During the morning session, Zarif presented Irans proposal, titled Closing an Unnecessary Crisis, and Opening New Horizons.
According to Irans Deputy Foreign Minister for International and Legal Affairs Abbas Araqchi, the second day of the talks in Geneva will start with a delay at 11 am local time (16:00 GMT), as the other side has requested more time to study the Iranian proposals.
Araqchi also described the talks as positive, adding that the other side has welcomed Tehrans new proposal.
Ashtons spokesman, Michael Mann, also said the six major world powers had a sense of cautious optimism over the ongoing round of nuclear talks with Iran, adding, We believe it is really time now for tangible results.
