TEHRAN, Sep. 28 (MNA) An Iranian-Canadian cast is scheduled to perform Chess with the Doomsday Machine -- which is about the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war -- during the Fajr International Theater Festival in Tehran in winter.The Canada-based Iranian director Shahin Sayyadi will helm the play, which is based on an adaptation of Iranian author Habib Ahmadzadehs Persian novel of the same name, Sayyadi said on the website of Onelight Theater, a Canadian producer of the play.
The story takes place in the early days of the Iran-Iraq war. It is about Isa, a teenage Iranian boy who stayed in Abadan to defend his hometown after the Iraq invasion of Iran.
Through Isas tale, the audience experiences how Abadan was reshaped by the war. Young men became soldiers, their fathers cooked for the forces and their mothers searched in vain for sons who did not return from the front.
U.S. scholar Paul Sprachman has previously translated the novel Chess with the Doomsday Machine into English and it was released by Mazda Publications.
The play will also go on stage in Abadan and the Canadian cities of Halifax and Calgary, Sayyadi said in a press release on Thursday.
Shahin Sayyadis father, Ali, was a veteran theater artist in Abadan who was martyred during the first days of the Iran-Iraq war in his hometown.
The play will be an international coproduction by Onelight Theater, a professional theater company based in Halifax.
The play will examine how people from vastly different backgrounds can build relationships of trust and support in times of intense upheaval, Onelight has said about the play.
