Israels new missile system bigger, more precise: official

An Israeli official says the latest generation of the Arrow missile system can carry a bigger payload with a higher precision.
According to a report by Israeli media network Arutz Sheva on Saturday, an Israeli Aerospace Industries(IAI)official said at an event in Tel Aviv University that the regime was developing a quicker and more accurate version of the Arrow missile system called the Arrow 3.

Inbal Kreis, the director of the Arrow 3 program at the IAI, also said the new missile system would be able to intercept ballistic missiles at high altitudes.

In February, the regime carried out a flight test of the Arrow 3 in conjunction with the United States.

The Arrow system, built to function against some ballistic missiles, made its first battery operational in October 2000.

The Arrow 3, which is called Hetz 3 in Hebrew, is supposed to be a more advanced version of the Arrow 2.

The development of the new system is expected to take two more years, the report said.

The system is part of Israel's multi-layer missile system, which also includes the Iron Dome and the Magic Wand.

The Iron Dome is a short-range rocket defense system designed to intercept rockets and artillery shells fired from a range of between four and 70 kilometers.

The Magic Wand, also called David's Sling, is expected to deal with medium-range rockets and cruise missiles, fired at ranges from 40 to 300 kilometers. The system is expected to become operational in 2014, the report said.

The Israeli regime is widely believed to be the only possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East. The regime reportedly maintains between 200 and 400 atomic warheads, but under its policy of so-called nuclear ambiguity, it has never denied nor confirmed its possession of the weapons of mass destruction.

Furthermore, the Israeli regime has never allowed any inspection of its nuclear facilities and continues to defy international calls to join the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
