US isolated by lack of international consensus to attack Syria: Iran MP
Senior Iranian lawmaker Mohammad Hassan Asafari says lack of international consensus for attacking Syria has isolated US officials.
The Americans have realized that attacking Syria will isolate them more than before, member of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Mohammad Hassan Asafari said on Wednesday.

He added that US claims that the Syrian government used chemical weapons is similar to the claim that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction in 2003.
Due to the resistance of nations and lack of international consensus, the US was forced to retreat from [its plan to] attack Syria, the lawmaker noted, adding, Given the international opposition to an attack on Syria, the US is looking for an excuse to exit the crisis, he added.
The war rhetoric against Syria primarily intensified after foreign-backed opposition forces accused the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of launching a chemical attack on militant strongholds on the suburbs of Damascus on August 21.

The Syrian government categorically rejected the accusation.

US President Barack Obama, who has faced very weak support for his war plans, said on August 31 that his administration would first seek authorization from an already skeptical Congress.

On Monday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Muallem said his country welcomes a Russian proposal to put its chemical weapons under international control. The Russian proposal was prompted by an apparently off-the-cuff comment by US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Following the new twist in events, Obama suggested that the planned US strikes on Syria could be averted if the Syrian gesture is real. The US president has, therefore, asked Congress to postpone a vote on his administrations plan to strike Syria.
