US vows to buy Syria peace if Damascus cuts ties with Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- Washington officials have provided the Damascus government with an opportunity to scape war and internal conflicts: cutting ties with Tehran, a senior Syrian diplomat said.

"At the beginning of the war (in Syria over 2.5 years ago) the US defense undersecretary explicitly announced (to the Syrian officials) that if we had cut our relations with Iran, the war would have ended," Syrian Ambassador to Iran Adnan Mahmoud said addressing a forum in Tehran dubbed 'Syria, the Fortress of Resistance' on Tuesday.

"The main goal of this war is obviously bringing to its knees the pivot of resistance whose main core is comprised of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Syria," he added.

The US and other western countries have adopted the rhetoric of war against Syria over allegations that the Syrian government was behind a recent chemical attack near Damascus.

The call for military strike intensified after the militants operating inside Syria and the foreign-backed Syrian opposition claimed on August 21 that hundreds had been killed in a government chemical attack on militant strongholds in the Damascus suburbs of Ain Tarma, Zamalka and Jobar. The Syrian government has strongly denied the claim, accusing the militants of the attack.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million of others displaced due to the violence.
