Brahimi calls on Iran to participate in Geneva meeting

Tehran, Aug 20, IRNA UN special peace envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi Monday evening called on Iran to take part in the international conference on Syria to be held in Geneva, Switzerland.
Brahimi made the remark in a telephone conversation with Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

He felicitated Zarif on his appointment as new foreign minister.

Brahimi stressed the need to find a proper solution to the Syrian crisis, expressing willingness to continue consultation with Tehran on the issue.

The international peace mediator further described Irans role in resolving regional issues as crucial and constructive.

Zarif, too, said Iran is willing to have closer and more effective cooperation with the United Nations on Syria.

Turning to the latest developments in Egypt, Zarif expressed deep concern over the current situation in that country and called for a halt to violence and respect for peoples legitimate demands.

The Iranian FM then expressed hope that the Egyptian crisis would be settled through mutual understanding and peaceful dialogue among all groups.
