UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss the foreign-sponsored militancy that has been plaguing Syria for over two years now.
According to UN spokesman Martin Nesirky, Ban met with Lavrov at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City on Thursday to discuss the escalating humanitarian crisis in Syria.
During the talks, Ban underscored the need to find a political solution to the conflict in Syria, Nesirky stated.
The UN secretary general also called for the immediate holding of another Geneva conference on Syria in an effort to bring the Syrian government and the foreign-backed opposition coalition to the negotiating table.

The Geneva 2 conference was proposed by Moscow and Washington on May 7. The international event will serve as a follow-up to an earlier Geneva meeting held in June 2012. There are speculations that the talks might be held in September.

Lavrov and Ban further exchanged views on important issues related to the Middle East and North Africa, according to Nesirky.

On Friday, the Russian foreign minister is scheduled to meet with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Washington. The two sides are expected to focus on the Syrian issue during the meeting.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. The United Nations says more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million others displaced since the outbreak of the violence.

According to reports, Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
