Debates can show capabilities of candidates: Jalili

Iranian Principlist candidate Saeed Jalili says Fridays live presidential debates could determine who has what it takes to run the country efficiently for the next four years.
The secretary of the Supreme National Security Council added that he welcomes presidential debates in the run up to the June 14 vote.
Definitely, debates can play an important role in demonstrating the capabilities of candidates and I too welcome it, Jalili said Monday.
He also said that he is serious about his candidacy and prefers to focus on it instead of the possibility of an alliance with other Principlist candidates.

Jalili said his campaign headquarters was busy planning his provincial visits and that he would soon tour the country.

Seven rivals are competing against Jalili in the upcoming election, including former Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Velayati, lawmaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, Secretary of Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei, Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, President of the Strategic Research Center of the Expediency Council Hassan Rohani, former First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref, and former Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Gharazi.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election, and the Guardian Council vets the candidates.
