Eurasia an engine of global economic growth: Iran

TEHRAN, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on Monday called for expansion of cooperation among Eurasian countries, saying that Eurasia is an engine of global economic growth, Iran's Mehr News Agency (MNA) reported.
Salehi made the remarks in a speech during the Islamic Republic of Iran and Eurasian Cooperation Conference, which opened in Tehran on Monday and closed on Tuesday.

"There is no doubt that Eurasia, given its vast potential, is one of the engines of the global economic growth and any development in it influences the international system," Salehi said in his speech.

He however added that Eurasia is grappling with various problems, which threaten the stability and security of the region and the world, including terrorism, extremism, illicit drugs, economic and political underdevelopment, sectarian conflicts, and political disagreements.

"Dealing with these problems and overcoming them requires cooperation, strengthening convergence, and utilising regional potential properly," he noted.

Officials and scholars from a number of countries attending the conference including Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China, and Germany.

Eurasia is the combined continental landmass of Europe and Asia. Located primarily in the Northern and Eastern Hemispheres, Eurasia stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east.
