Iran's chief nuclear negotiator to visit India

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed JaliliNEW DELHI: The head of Iran's SupremeNational Security Counciland its chief nuclear negotiatorSaeed Jaliliwill visit India this week.Jaliliis expected to hold talks on issues related to Afghanistan and also brief Indian authorities about Iran's negotiations withIAEAover its nuclear power programme.
Jalili is expected to meet foreign ministerSalman Khurshid,NSA Shivshankar Menonandforeign secretary Ranjan Mathai. So far, Tehran has not responded to P5+1 countries' proposal for next round of talks.

There are suggestions that the talks may happen after Iran's dialogue with the IAEA this month. The two sides are also likely to discussthe situationin Syria.

After the last round of talks on December 13, while there was no agreement,IAEA chiefsaid that there was some progress as both sides seemed willing to have an agreement. IAEA believes that despite being a member of NPT,Iranhas indulged in activities relevant for manufacturing of nuclear weapons. India wants a solution through exclusively political and diplomatic means by promoting dialogue. New Delhi believed that unilateral sanctions are counter-productive and recognizesIran's rightto develop research, produce and use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes in conformity with its international obligations. At the same time, it wants Iran to comply with the provisions of the relevant UNSecurity Council Resolutionsand extend full cooperation to the IAEA.
