Iran holds rallies marking U.S. embassy takeover anniversary
By: Trend

Iran today marks the 33rd anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in the capital city of Tehran, IRIB News reported.

Just as in previous years, the nation marks the historic occasion and the country's national Student Day sa well.

The protests are already underway, against "international imperialism", as millions of Iranians in different cities across the country take part in the rallies.

On November 4, 1979, a group of revolutionary Iranian university students took over the US Embassy which they believed had turned into a den of espionage which aimed to overthrow the nascent Islamic Republic establishment.

As a result of the siege, 53 diplomatic employees of the U.S. embassy were held as hostages for 444 days.

Participants in the annual rally in front of the former US embassy in Tehran known by the Iranians as "the den of spies" condemned the US allegations about Iran's involvement in a terrorist plot, voiced support for the growing wave of Islamic awakening in the region as well as the popular anti-capitalism protests in the US and condemned the imposed sanctions against Iran.
