Sputnik - On Thursday night, the United States launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Syrian military airfield in Ash Shairat, located about 40 kilometers from the city of Homs.

US President Donald Trump said the attack was a response tothe alleged use ofchemical weapons inSyria's Idlib onTuesday, which Washington and its allies blame onthe Syrian government.

"Tonight, I ordered a targeted military strike onthe air field inSyria fromwhere the chemical attack was launched. It is inthis vital national security ofthe United States toprevent and deter the spread and use ofdeadly chemical weapons," the president told reporters.

The missile strike resulted incasualties amongSyrian servicemen and damages tothe facility and military equipment.

The move was welcomed bya number ofcountries, including the UK, France, Germany and Turkey, while Russia described the attack asan "act ofaggression againsta sovereign state" and said the missile strike played inthe hands ofterrorists.

According toKoray Gurbuz, a military expert atthe Ankara-based Bilkent University, the US missile strike inSyria is a violation ofinternational norms and indicates that instead ofnegotiating withSyrias legitimate government, Washington acts byforce infavor ofterrorists.
"If we want toexplain why the US delivered a missile strike onthe Syrian airbase we need totake a look back atwhat was happening aroundIraq 15 years ago. In order toinvade Iraq, the US provided false information and fake images that the Iraqi government allegedly used chemical weapons againsttheir citizens," Gurbuz said inan interview with Sputnik Turkey.

On Tuesday, the Syrian National Coalition ofRevolution and Opposition Forces (SNC) reported that some 80 people were killed and 200 others injured ina chemical weapons attack inIdlib. The opposition group blamed the Syrian Army forthe attack.

Later, the Syrian Army command rejected the allegations, saying the responsibility forthe attack lies withmilitants and their sponsors.

The Organization forthe Prohibition ofChemical Weapons (OPCW) said that its Fact Finding Mission has begun the process ofgathering and analyzing information fromall available sources.
"There can be no dispute that Syria used banned chemical weapons, violated its obligations underthe Chemical Weapons Convention and ignored the urging ofthe UN Security Council. Years ofprevious attempts atchanging Assad's behavior have all failed and failed very dramatically," President Trump said.

Gurbuz suggested that Washingtons goal inSyria is torepeat the Iraqi scenario.

"The US invaded Iraq. Today, the country is plunged inchaos, panic and uncertainty. Iraq is de-facto torn intopieces. The Iraqi government is controlled byWashington," the expert said.

According tohim, the preparation forthe "Iraqi scenario" forSyria has been underway fora while.

"Media has published photos and images aboutchemical weapons inSyria. A number ofstatements have been made that the US was very concerned. There have been calls forWashingtons active involvement inthe situation. Of course, there is no coincidence," Gurbuz pointed out.

He further elaborated onthe possible scenario ofWashington's next steps inSyria.
"The US is nurturing a plan ofa full-scale intervention ofSyria. Instead ofestablishing contacts withthe legitimate Syrian government, Washington prefers violating international law and acting byforce infavor ofterrorist groups," he said.

Gurbuz also said that the ultimate goal ofWashingtons policy inSyria is toestablish a "puppet government," inorder topressure and control other sovereign states inthe region.
"Their attempts tohelp establish a Kurdish entity onIraqi and Syrian territories are also part ofthis plan. Thus, the missile strike inSyria is another step towardsthis goal," he concluded.
