Russia and Iran key role in fighting ISIS, says former Pakistani FM

Prensa Latina- ''Pakistan must call on Russia and Iran to cooperate to fight the growing threat of the terrorist group ISIS in the region,'' said former Foreign Secretary Najmuddin A. Shaikh today.

During a symposium on Afghanistan and Pakistan at the 8th Karachi Literary Festival, Shaikh said that Russia and Iran could play a key role in preventing the spread of IS. Shaikh, also former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, Iran and Germany, said that almost 38 percent of Afghan territory is in the hands of the Taliban.

'Stability in Afghanistan is a precondition for stability and progress in Pakistan,' he said.

In that regard, he highlighted the importance of a meeting on this subject, to be held in the coming days in Moscow.

According to Shaikh, officials of the Afghan Government, who did not identify, support instability in Afghanistan because the current chaos allows them to benefit from the growing of the poppy, from which the heroin is extracted.
