"The new sanctions are not compatible withAmerica's commitments and resolution 2231 ofthe U.N. Security Council that endorsed the nuclear deal reached betweenIran and six powers," the statement said. "In retaliation forthe U.S. sanctions, Iran will impose legal restrictions onsome American individuals and entities that were involved inhelping and founding regional terrorist groups."

Following the announcement, US National Security Advisor Michael Flynn stated that the days ofturning "a blind eye toIran's hostile and belligerent actions are over." Earlier this week, Flynn had formally placed Iran "on notice."

Earlier inthe day, the US Treasury Department introduced a new roundof sanctions against25 entities and individuals.

"Todays sanctions really represent a very, very strong stand againstthe actions that Iran has been taking, and make it very clear that the deal struck previously was not inbest interest ofthis country and that President Trump is going todo everything he can tomake sure Iran is staying incheck," Spicer stated.
