Saudis offered me a bribe to abandon Syrian government, MP tells Sputnik

Sputnik News- Saudi Arabia attempted to bribe parliamentarians in order to persuade them to oppose the Syrian government, an MP tells Sputnik.
Mohammed Kheir Jasim al-Nadir said that while some Syrian leaders have indeed taken bribes fromSaudi Arabia and stayed inthe country, he refused the offer and went toserve Syria instead.

"Saudi Arabia offered us money tobreak away fromAssad and oppose the Syrian government. We were offered it (the bribe) atthe house ofthe Syrian ambassador toRiyadh Mahdi Dakhlallah," al-Nadir said.

"They tempted us withhouses and money. They gave us a blank check which could be filled outwith any sum, if we announced a U-turn. But, asthey say, a person who is good does the right thing fortheir country, fortheir people. Nobody can be separated fromtheir people, nobody can abandon their homeland. We are withSyria, withour land, withthe valiant Syrian army."

"Unfortunately, some Syrian leaders left forSaudi Arabia because ofmoney. I had a Saudi passport, butI left everything and went toSyria," al-Nadir said.

Earlier this week representatives ofthe Syrian government and opposition factions meet inAstana fortalks brokered byMoscow, Ankara and Tehran, followinga ceasefire inthe crisis-torn country endorsed bythe UN Security Council onDecember 31, 2016.

As the talks ended onTuesday, Syrian government and opposition representatives signed a declaration ona ceasefire monitoring mechanism touphold the nationwide ceasefire agreement.

Russia, Iran and Turkey also decided toestablish a trilateral mechanism tomonitor the ceasefire inSyria asresult ofthe Astana talks, which are tobe followed bya UN-mediated meeting inGeneva expected totake place onFebruary 8.
