Sputnik- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed in a phone call on Monday the preparation for the upcoming international consultations on Syria peace process in Kazakh capital, Astana, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) The Astana talks are scheduled tobe held next Monday, January 23, followed byan anticipated roundof intra-Syrian negotiations inGeneva onFebruary 8. Earlier inthe day, a political adviser tothe UN special envoy forSyria told Sputnik that the Astana talks may be postponed.

"The ministers exchanged opinions the situation inSyria, stressing the need forstrict implementation ofthe ceasefire inthe country established withmediation ofRussia and Turkey," the ministry said ina statement. "The sides also discussed practical issues ofthe preparation ofan international meeting onthe Syrian crisis settlement inAstana considering the results ofthe January 13 consultations betweenRussia, Turkey, and Iran inMoscow," the statement said. On December 17, 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed ina phone call the possibility ofa meeting betweenthe Syrian conflicting parties inAstana. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev supported the initiative and expressed readiness toprovide a platform forsuch talks inthe Kazakh capital.
