Zarif: World open to referendum in Syria

TEHRAN, Oct. 19 (MNA) Irans FM at a closed session of Parliament on Wed. said political conditions are being provided for holding a referendum in Syria.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif attended a closed session of Parliament this morning to discuss the latest developments in region and his presence at the recent Lausanne talks on Syrian crisis which was alsoattended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, US State Secretary John Kerry, UN Special Envoy forSyria Staffan De Mistura, aswell asforeign ministers ofQatar, Iraq, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

According to MNA correspondent who has talked to MPs present in the session, Zarif announced that political conditions are being provided for holding a referendum in Syria.

He further added that the Western side that previously insisted on removing Bashar Assad as the only solution for settling Syrian crisis is now acceding to a referendum.

The Iranian senior diplomat also discussed Irans conditions for taking part in Lausanne talks on Syria, saying the condition was that a more balanced composition of countries attend the talks and that the participating countries not be limited to Qatar, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Zarif stressed that the other side acquiescedin Irans demand and Iraq and E.gypt were invited to sat at Lausanne talks by Irans request.

On Tuesday, Adviser to FM Zarif, Hossein Sheikholeslam, said the Iranian delegation at Lausanne talks stopped the other sides from taking an anti-Syrian decision which would place all the blame for the current situation in Syria on the Syrian government.
