Canadian sentenced to three years in prison for violating Iran sanctions

A US Judge sentenced a Canadian-Iranian citizen to three years in prison for conspiracy to violate economic sanctions placed on Iran, the US Attorneys Office for the Southern District of New York said in a statement.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) Parsa, 45, conspired toobtain high-technology electronic components fromUS companies between2009 and 2015 inan effort toship them toIranian clients inviolation ofUS economic sanctions, according toprosecutors.

"Ali Reza Parsa [was sentenced] tothree years inprison forhis participation ina conspiracy toviolate the International Emergency Economic Power Act (IEEPA) and the Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations (ITSR)," the statement said onMonday.

The components that Parsa attempted toobtain included cryogenic accelerometers, which measure acceleration and have both commercial and military uses, including inapplications related toballistic missile propellants and rocket engines, prosecutors added.

Moreover, Parsa allegedly provided false destination and end-user information aboutthe components inorder toconceal the illegality ofthese transactions, according tocourt records.

Parsa was arrested inOctober 2014 and pled guilty inJanuary 2016.
