To Persia with love: Russia to increase direct flights to Iran

The number of direct passenger flights between Russia and Iran will increase substantially in the near future.





The Ministry ofTransport ofthe Russian Federation has provided the airline Siberia (S7 Airlines is part ofthe group) and Ural Airlines withapproval toperform regular flights toIran.
It is noteworthy that beforethis initiative, the desire toorganize direct flights toIran was brought forward bysome other Russian air carriers, such asGrozny-Avia, North Wind, VIM-Avia and Icarus, buttheir requests fordirect flight toIran had been denied.


Two Russias leading passenger carriers S7 Airlines and Ural Airlines managed toget approval fromthe Russian aviation authorities afterFebruary, when Moscow and Tehran signed a memorandum onincreasing the number offlights to28 per week.


Today this agreement has been transferred toa practical level. The number ofdirect flights and the route they will take was discussed bya spokesperson forthe airline Siberia (S7 Airlines), Anna Bazhina, inan interview withSputnik.
Indeed, we have been assigned to4 routes, Moscow Tehran, Moscow Isfahan, Moscow Mashhad, St. Petersburg Tehran. S7 Airline chose this particular route asit sees a potential inthis. The frequency offlights and opening dates are unknown so far, aswe have just received the information and our colleagues are ata preparatory stage, Bazhina said.


All the S7 flights are carried outon modern aircraft bythe world's leading manufacturers Airbus and Boeing. Which ofthese two models ofaircraft are going tobe used forflights toIran has not been determined yet, Bazhina said.

Currently, Russian airline Aeroflot flies toTehran four times a week, while Iran Air flies only once a week. According tothe summer schedule of2016 a charter Iranian airline, Mahan Air, is set tostart flights toSochi.
