TEHRAN (Tasnim) Prominent lawmakers from Iran and Russia lashed out at the West, the US in particular, for adopting wrong policies that have fueled tensions in the Middle East region and have led to the spread of terrorism.
Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi held a meeting with visiting Chairman of the Russian State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee Alexander Pushkov in Tehran on Monday.
During the meeting, the legislators discussed a range of bilateral and international issues, with both pointing the finger of blame at the US for a surge in the terrorist activities and insecurity across the Middle East region.

The excessive demands and the wrong policies adopted by the US and its regional allies is the main reason behind crisis in the region, while the continued supports by the powerful countries for the terrorist groups will by no means help solve the crisis in the region, Boroujerdi said.

The Russian lawmaker, for his part, criticized the Western attitudes toward the Middle East, and said, Counter-terrorism is the false justification used by the US and the Western countries for presence in the region, and this policy has caused the spread of terrorism and insecurity in the region.

Since late September, the US and several of its allies have been conducting airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group inside Syria and Iraq with almost no significant result.

The ISIL is a militant group in Iraq and Syria believed to be supported by the West and some regional Arab countries.

The terrorist group claims as an independent state the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, occupied Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.
