Tehran, May 6, IRNA – Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said in her weekly press briefing on Tuesday that the international community must help restore peace in Syria, Ukraine, Nigeria and other volatile regions.
Speaking about the content of recent talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and UN Special Representative on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi, she noted that that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to help restore peace in the region.
Syria Presidential Elections is an opportunity for all Syrians and outside powers involved in the Syrian conflict to help restoration of peace in Syria through democratic and political means, Afkham asserted.
In the meantime, she expressed concern about the growing chaos and bloodshed in Ukraine, calling for peace efforts by all the domestic and foreign powers involved in the Ukraine political crisis.
She said that the peace efforts in Ukraine must focus on normalization of the situation in Ukraine and avoid provocative actions.
The spokeswoman expressed shock and indignation about the abduction of more than 200 school girls in Nigeria, terming the practice the gross violation of human rights.
Extremism and terrorism have posed threat to the world security including the western African country of Nigeria, she said.
Afkham stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran expresses outrage about such actions and asks the international community to do something against the spread of extremism, terrorism around the world.
Speaking about Iranian diplomat abducted in Yemen, she noted that Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian will pay a visit to the country to confer with the Yemeni officials in this regard.
She categorically ruled out alleged Iranian support for certain political groups in Iraq parliamentary elections, she noted that enemy plots to prevent large turnout in the Iraqi parliamentary elections are doomed to failure.
Holding the first parliamentary elections after the exit of foreign troops from Iraq is a great success for the Iraqi nation and government, spokeswoman added.
She noted that Iran is committed to expand relations with all regional countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
Asked about the current visit of the Armenian foreign minister to Tehran, Afkham said that Tehran-Yerevan relations are developing and the two countries senior officials have agreed to implement the agreements already sined by the two countries.
She added that Iran and Armenia aim to enhance interactions between private sectors.
Elaborating on the Foreign Ministry measures to help Iranian prisoners sentenced to death in Malaysia as well as the case of Iranian abducted border guard Jamshid Danaeefar, Afkham said that the foreign ministry will do its best to help them.
On the current visit to Islamabad of Iranian Interior Minister Abdolrahman Fazli, she said that the current visit can help upgrade relations in all fields and closer cooperation on border security.
