TEHRAN, May 2 (MNA) – Iranians celebrate National Teachers' Day on martyrdom anniversary of Ayatollah Morteza Motahari, a notorious intellectual and teacher.


Motahari is considered among the important influences on the ideologies of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He was a follower of Imam Khomeini during the Shah's reign and formed the Council of Revolution of Iran at Imam Khomeini's request. On 1 May 1979 Morteza Motahari was assassinated in Tehran by gunshot by a member of Furqan group and every year his martyrdom anniversary is celebrated as National Teachers' Day in the country.

On the occasion, May 1 or 2, Iranians celebrate teaching and honor teachers for their sincerity. This is a profession considered sacred as the founder of Islamic Republic of Iran Imam Khomeini regards ‘teaching as prophets’ profession’. In Iran schools around the country mark the day by special ceremonies and students express gratitude to their teachers for their hard work.
