TEHRAN (FNA)- Supreme Leader's top aide for international affairs Ali Akbar Velayati in a meeting with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics conferred on the latest bilateral and regional developments, specially the crises in Syria and Ukraine.
"In this meeting, we discussed the issues pertaining to Syria, Ukraine and Afghanistan as well as Iran's peaceful nuclear program," Velayati told reporters after negotiations with Rinkevics in Tehran on Wednesday.
The Latvian top diplomat, for his part, elaborated on the contents of the meeting, and said, "We discussed issues of mutual interests and it was an important meeting, given the fact that we will take over the EU presidency in the future."
"We also held negotiations on the development of relations between the two sides," he added.
Rinkevics arrived in Tehran today on an official visit to discuss ways to promote Tehran-Riga relations with senior Iranian officials.
He is accompanied by several Latvian businessmen and economists during his stay in Tehran.
The Latvian foreign minister is slated to meet President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif during his visit to Iran.
Rinkevich is the first senior Latvian official to visit Iran since independence of that country in early 1990s.
Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania are the Baltic group of states. Latvia is also a member of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). It joined euro countries since the beginning of 2014.
