Police chief blames foreign meddling for instability in Iran’s eastern borders

17 Apr 2014 - 13:02

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s police chief described foreign interference as the reason behind instability in the country’s eastern borders.
Speaking on the sidelines of the “Eqtedar (Might) 3” exercises, Brigadier General Esmail Ahmadi Moqaddam said instability and insecurity in the eastern border areas of Iran are the result of intelligence and security meddling by foreign countries.

He also pointed to the current conditions in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and said as long as world terrorist and drug trafficking hubs exist near Iran’s borders, insecurities are likely to continue.

Brigadier General Ahmadi Moqaddam further referred to the insufficient investment of neighboring countries and their lack of responsibility as other causes of recent insecurities in these areas.

He underlined the need for more investments for upholding security.

After the abduction of Iranian border guards in southeast of the country, Pakistan was criticized by Iranian officials for failure to secure its borders with Iran despite the joint security agreement signed by the two countries.

On February 6, the so-called Jaish-ul-Adl terrorist group kidnapped five border guards in Jakigour region in Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan and took them to Pakistan.

Four of them were released earlier in April and returned home after being held hostage for two months but the fate of the fifth remains unaccounted for.
