Iran would pursue Abutalebi’s case via the UN

13 Apr 2014 - 14:56

TEHRAN, April 13 (MNA) – Deputy-FM for Europe and American Affairs has said Iran would pursue Abutalebi’s case via the UN.
Majid Takht Ravanchi told Mehr News that Iran could bring the case to the UN Secretariat, or contact the Secretary-General ki-Moon as possible ways.

“We would not consider a substitute for Mr. Abutalebi; rather, we will pursue his case before the UN,” he added.

Commenting on the possibility of summoning the Swiss ambassador to Tehran as the US Interests Section in Iran, Takht Ravanchi said that the case had nothing to do with Iran-US relations, but “it is an issue related to the UN.”

“Mr. Abutalebi is Iran’s nominee for the position of Iran’s envoy to the UN and there would be no role for the US as issuing a visa for an Iranian citizen,” he asserted, believing that the UN should intervene in the issue, since “Iran’s envoy to the UN is located in New York and the city is the UN seat.”

On possible opening of embassies in Tehran and London and Iran-British relations, and meeting with Simon Gass, he told that the session was focused mainly on nuclear issues.

“We agreed with the British government on opening the embassies and the arrangements are on place according to the agenda,” Takht Ravanchi added. “Mr. Habibollahzadeh will visit London as Iran’s non-resident chargé d'affaires in the framework of a series of mutual visits to capital cities.”

Takht Ravanchi also said that in the near future, Austrian president would visit Tehran.
