Pakistan says extended full cooperation to Iran over guards

4 Apr 2014 - 12:31

A high-ranking Pakistani official says the Islamabad government has “extended full cooperation” to Iran over the issue of the abduction of five Iranian border guards and their transfer to Pakistan.

Speaking in a press briefing in Islamabad on Thursday, Pakistan’s Foreign Office Spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam termed the kidnapping as “unfortunate,” stressing that the Pakistani government has condemned both the abduction of the Iranian border guards and the purported execution of one of the hostages as claimed by Jaish-ul-Adl terrorist group.
“We have also expressed sympathy with the family of the victim and we have extended full cooperation to Iran on this issue,” she said.
Aslam further noted that the abduction of the Iranian guards would not undermine the relations between Iran and Pakistan as the ties are deeply-rooted.

There have been conflicting reports about the fate of the Iranian hostages.

On Wednesday,  Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour said the five Iranian border guards are unharmed and in good health.

The Jaish-ul-Adl terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the February 6 abduction of the five Iranian border guards in the Jakigour region in Iran’s Sistan-and-Baluchestan Province and their transfer to Pakistani territory.

On March 23, the terror group claimed that it had killed one of the hostages. It also threatened to kill another one of the Iranian border guards.

No evidence has been obtained yet to prove the hostage takers’ claim of having killed one of the captive Iranian soldiers, the Iranian deputy foreign minister said.

Despite the threats, Rahimpour said, “no amateurish action has been taken” by the terror group.

On October 25, 2013, the Jaish-ul-Adl terrorist group killed 14 Iranian border guards and wounded six others in the border region near the city of Saravan in Sistan-and-Baluchestan Province.
