The European Union and the United States have voiced support for their ongoing negotiations with Iran in an effort to fully resolve the decade-old dispute over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

In a joint statement issued following a meeting in Brussels on Wednesday, senior EU and US officials said they would “continue to make every effort to ensure a successful” resolution of the nuclear issue.

The statement further hailed the interim nuclear accord inked between Iran and the P5+1 group – Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany – in Geneva, Switzerland, last November, stressing, “Efforts must now focus on producing a comprehensive and final settlement.”

Under the interim accord, which took effect on January 20, the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period.
The EU-US statement further pointed to the February round of nuclear negotiations between Tehran and the six countries in the Austrian capital, Vienna, and said the discussions led to “an understanding on the key issues that need to be resolved, and in a timetable for negotiations over the next few months.”
Following the landmark Geneva deal, Iran and the P5+1 group have continued their talks to hammer out a permanent agreement on Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

Iran and its negotiating partners wrapped up their latest round of high-level nuclear talks in Vienna on March 19. The two sides are set to resume their negotiations on April 7-9.
