Iranians develop machine to separate saffron’s stamen

15 Mar 2014 - 12:49

TEHRAN, March 15 (MNA) – Iranian researcher has developed a machine that separates saffron’s stamen from the other parts of the flower.
Mohsen Safayi the research director told Mehr News that saffron flower had two stamens, one yellow and the other red. “Only the red stamen has palatable taste and color and used as food additive and coloring agent, and other parts is of no value,” said he.

“Currently, the red stamen is separated by hand. We conducted a research to optimize the separation process and developed a machine which does the job automatically,” he added.

“The flowers are fed into the machine after harvest. The machine arranges the flowers and then separates the red saffron,” Safayi said. “The machine separates the red root of saffron,” he added, and that “the machine is still in laboratory stage and we work to manufacture its commercial version.”

He also said that the machine would contribute to the development of saffron industry and exports.
