Police disband 2 armed drug gangs in Southern Iran

27 Feb 2014 - 9:44

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior provincial police commander announced on Wednesday that two armed gangs involved in drug-trafficking activities have been disbanded in the Southern Fars province.

“A sum of 4 tons of illicit drugs have been discovered and seized in two operations which led to the disbanding of the two drug gangs in the province,” Fars Province Police Commander Brigadier General Sirous Sajjadian told reporters on Wednesday.

He noted that a sum of 800 kilograms of narcotics were discovered in the first operation and 3,200 kilograms in another operation.

“Three drug traffickers were killed during the clashes in the first operation which lasted over seven hours,” Brigadier General Sajjadian said.

He noted that several weapons and ammunition have also been seized from the drug traffickers together with a van and truck.

Iran, located at the crossroad of international drug smuggling from Afghanistan to Europe, has taken new security measures in its border provinces following several attacks by terrorists and drug traffickers at its Eastern and Western borders.

The anti-drug squads of the Iranian Law Enforcement Police have intensified their countrywide campaign against drug-trafficking through staging long-term systematic operations since 2010.

The Iranian anti-narcotic police have always staged periodic, but short-term, operations against drug traffickers and dealers, but the latest reports - which among others indicate an improved and systematic dissemination of information - reveal that the world's most forefront and dedicated anti-narcotic force (as UN drug-campaign assessments put it) has embarked on a long-term countrywide plan to crack down on the drug trade since three years ago.
