Zabol Governor Hooshang Nazeri has announced that 80 percent of his city has become unemployed due to many years of continued droughts.
Nazeri, who was speaking at a meeting to promote alternative forms of employment in Sistan Province, told ISNA that prior to the droughts, the people of Sistan were mostly engaged in farming, raising livestock and fishing.
He added that Zabol’s jobless rate became the highest in the whole country in recent years due to climate change in the region.
The Zabol governor added that gemstone cutting, sericulture, aquaculture and food-canning factories are among the proposals for creating jobs in Sistan province.
Sistan-Baluchistan Province in southeastern Iran has higher unemployment rates than any other part of the country.
