Turkey may double natural gas imports from Iran, minister

16 Feb 2014 - 15:39

Tehran, Feb 16, IRNA – Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said negotiations have been held to review Turkey’s proposal to double its gas imports from Iran, increasing it to 20 billion cubic meters annually.

Zanganeh said Tehran will formally announce its proposal for pricing of natural gas to Turkey after assessing Turkey’s proposal.

Commenting on remarks made by Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz on Iran’s decrease in the gas price to Turkey, Zanganeh said he had no idea about the remarks.

“Talks have been held between Iranian and Turkish officials on considering a discount if the volume of exports is doubled, but Iran has not fully agreed to the request yet,” Zanganeh reiterated. “We will formally announce our decision on the issue.”

Turkey meets its gas demand through imports. Iran has the world’s second largest natural gas reserves after Russia and is the second supplier of gas to Turkey after Russia.
