Deputy FM: Ties with Tajikistan among Iran’s top priorities

15 Feb 2014 - 13:36

TEHRAN (FNA)- Further expansion of relations with Tajikistan sets a top priority in Tehran’s foreign policy, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Rahimpour said, adding that the two countries will hold a meeting of their Joint Economic Cooperation Commission soon.

“Tajikistan is among our top priorities in the Central Asia and the Islamic Republic pays special attention to this region,” Rahimpour said in a press conference in Dushanbe on Friday night.

Stressing Iran and Tajikistan’s determination to further consolidate ties and cooperation, he said that the Iranian and Tajik presidents and foreign ministers will meet each other in 2014.

Noting that the value of economic exchanges between the two countries exceeded $300mln in 2013, Ebrahimi said that a meeting of the Iran-Tajikistan Joint Economic Cooperation Commission will be held in the near future.

He stressed Iran’s aid and assistance to Tajikistan's development, reminding that Tehran is building Sangtoudeh-II power plant in Tajikistan.

Iranian and Tajik officials have recently accelerated expansion of the two countries’ ties and cooperation, specially after the empowerment of the new government in Iran.

On September 13, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stressed the expansion of the mutual relations and cooperation between Iran and Tajikistan in a meeting with his Tajik counterpart in the Kyrgyz capital city of Bishkek on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.

Iran has contributed $180bln to construction of Sangtoudeh-II power plant in Tajikistan. The power plant's construction work began on September 5, 2011 at the presence of the Iranian and Tajik presidents.

Sangtoudeh-II is located 120 km Southeast of the Capital city of Dushanbe.
