Ahmadinejad's formal request to visit Evin prison

21 Oct 2012 - 14:23

Ahmadinejad has formally requested head of Judiciary to make necessary arrangements for his visit to Evin prison, following Judicial Authorities' disagreement with the President's visit to the prison,

In his letter to Iranian Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has asked him to command arrangements for his visit to Evin prison as soon as possible.

It was written in the letter that Ahmadinejad was supposed to visit the prison on Oct. 8, but a day earlier (October 7) Judicial Authorities wanted that the visit be postponed to the next days.

Morteza Bakhtiari Minister of Justice said on Sunday that he will sustain the President's letter to the Judiciary to visit Evin prison.

Moreover, having investigated Ahmadinejad's motives to visit Evin prison, some Iranian media say that the President decided to visit the prison since his top press advisor, the director of the state news agency IRNA, Ali Akbar Javanfekr has been taken into custody.

Ali Akbar Javanfekr was charged with publishing material contrary to Islamic norms and human values in a special issue of Khatun magazine. He was also accused of insults of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Ahmadinejad has expressed regret over the imprisonment of Javanfekr, noting that he will pursue this issue.
