25 Jan 2014 - 10:05

The perpetrators of the recent assassination of an Iranian diplomat in Yemen have been identified, announces a Tehran official.

“Those who carried out the abduction and assassination of martyred diplomat Abolqasem Asadi have been identified,” said Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on the sidelines of a memorial service held in Tehran on Friday to honor the slain diplomat.
He pointed to the setting up of an investigative committee to probe the incident and noted, “After the investigation, the name of the country involved in the assassination of the Iranian diplomat will be announced.”
He said further details will be made public in due time.

Asadi, the commercial attaché at the Iranian Embassy in Sana’a, was gunned down on January 18 by members of a terrorist group outside the Iranian ambassador’s residence in the Yemeni capital.

The assailants first tried to kidnap the Iranian diplomat but when they faced resistance, they opened fire on him. The diplomat, who sustained serious injuries, later passed away in hospital.

Following the fatal shooting of the Iranian diplomat, Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Yemeni chargé d'affaires to protest the incident.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular, Parliamentary and Iranian Expatriates Affairs Hassan Qashqavi said on Wednesday that Tehran will soon dispatch a delegation to Yemen to look into the assassination.

Meanwhile, Yemen’s Foreign Ministry denounced the attack, adding that the authorities are determined to bring the attackers to justice.
