Iran Majlis to follow up diplomat death in Yemen

19 Jan 2014 - 22:22

Majlis will probe the assassination of an Iranian diplomat in Yemen, says the deputy head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.
“Definitely, the issue will be examined in the first session of the committee and to learn about the investigation process and the follow-ups by the Foreign Ministry, the country’s diplomatic apparatus will be questioned,” said Mansour Haqiqatpour in a Saturday interview.

On Saturday, the commercial attaché of the Iranian Embassy in Sana’a, Abolqasem Asadi, was gunned down by members of a terrorist group outside the Iranian ambassador’s residence in the Yemeni capital.

The assailants first tried to kidnap the Iranian diplomat but when they faced resistance, opened fire on him. The diplomat who was seriously injured passed away in hospital.

Yemen’s Foreign Ministry says the country would welcome an Iranian delegation to Sana’a and is ready to cooperate with Iran in investigating the attack.

Haqiqatpour also pointed to the last-year abduction of another Iranian diplomat in Yemen and noted that the Foreign Ministry should follow up both issues seriously until the culprits are identified.

On July 21, 2013, Iranian diplomat Nour Ahmad Nikbakht was on his way to work from his home in the diplomatic quarter of Sana’a, when unidentified gunmen blocked the road, forced him out of his vehicle and abducted him.
