TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran will take over rotating presidency of the Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union (IIPU) next month as the Iranian capital city of Tehran is scheduled to host the 9th meeting of the IIPU in February.
“The 9th IIPU assembly will be held from February 14 to 19 in the Tehran Summit Convention Hall,” Director of the Protocol Office of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Yasrebi told the Tasnim News Agency on Monday.
Yasrebi said that the Iranian Parliament has invited the speakers of 53 Islamic countries to the event, predicting that at least 40 speakers would participate in the Tehran meeting.
He said that during the event, Iran will take over rotating presidency of the IIPU from Sudan for one year.
The 8th meeting of Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union was held in Khartoum, capital of Sudan, on January 21-22, 2013.
Senior officials of 48 member countries’ parliaments, including Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani attended the meeting.
The IIPU was established in 1999 based on an initiative by Iran. It seeks to strengthen the parliamentary cooperation among the Islamic countries in order to solve the challenges facing the Islamic world.
