Iran will attend the upcoming international peace talks about the crisis in Syria without any preconditions if Tehran intends to attend the meeting, an Iranian official says.
“The presence of Iran [in the Geneva II conference] can make a big contribution to …a political and peaceful Syria solution,” Director General of the Iranian Foreign Ministry's Office for Middle East and North Africa Reza Ameri said on Monday.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is among effective countries that has always been a part of the solution to the Syrian crisis,” he added.
The Iranian official noted that the Geneva II conference can begin a political process to resolve the crisis in Syria.
Ameri emphasized that the Geneva II conference can result in appropriate outcomes if all effective sides involved in the Syrian crisis are permitted to express their positive views.
On November 25, the UN set January 22, 2014, as the date for the Geneva 2 talks.
The conference is scheduled to be held in Switzerland in two parts. On January 22, the opening session of the event will be in the Swiss city of Montreux and then it will be moved to the UN office in Geneva on January 24.
The talks aim to find a political solution to the deadly crisis that has gripped Syria since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
In December, UN Syria envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said that Iran's participation in the Syria peace conference had not been decided yet due to the US opposition.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, however, believes that Iran should be invited to the peace conference on Syria.
According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the turmoil that has gripped Syria for almost three years.
