Tehran, Jan 3, IRNA – Iran’s technical nuclear talks with the Sextet is almost finished and a couple of remaining issues are in need of decision making by the two sides’ politicians, said Iranian deputy foreign minister for European and American affairs on Friday.
“Those couple of technical matters will be resolved during the upcoming bilateral talks between Seyyed Abbas Araqchi and Ms. Helga Schmidt (the two sides 2nd top political negotiators)”, said Majid Takhte-Ravanchi on the sidelines of a commemoration service for Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif’s recently deceased mother.

“Araqchi’s meeting with Ms. Schmidt will be held within the next couple of weeks in one of the European cities,” he said.

Takhte-Ravanchi said that the time for implementing the first step, or the same joint work plan has not been precisely set yet, which will be set after resolving those couple of remaining issues by Araqchi and Schmidt, after which implementing that plan based on the Geneva nuclear deal will begin.

He said that after beginning implementing that joint work plan, a new round of talks between Iran and the six world powers will begin.

Deputy Foreign Minister and member of nuclear negotiating team Abbas Araqchi, too, said on January 2nd that the timetable for implementation of Geneva deal will be declared after minor issues between the two sides are resolved.

Speaking to IRNA, he described the last meeting between the two sides’ experts on Geneva deal as ‘positive’.

Presently, technical issues have been resolved but there are some minor differences which should be patched up through exchange of views between the two sides’ politicians, he said.

As soon as these issues are resolved, the timetable for implementing Geneva deal will be made public, he said.

These differences stem from different interpretations of the Geneva deal and it seems that all these problems could be resolved by referring to the text of Geneva deal, Araqchi said.

They have proposed different timetables but the two parties should reach a mutual understanding, he said.

Foreign media quoted western diplomats as saying that January 20 sounds a suitable time to implement Geneva deal.

Exchange of views between the two sides’ experts took about 20 hours.
