An Iranian lawmaker says the US opposes Iran’s presence in the Syria crisis conference to serve the interests of Saudi Arabia and the Israeli regime.
“The US is the main opponent of Iran’s presence in the Geneva II [conference] because it (Washington) seeks a military solution [to the Syria crisis] which will be beneficial to the Zionist regime (Israel) and Saudi Arabia,” spokesman for the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Majlis Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said on Friday.

US authorities are well aware that all countries will embrace Iran’s solution to the Syria conflict if Tehran attends the Geneva II conference, he said, adding that the international community has acknowledged that Iran plays a key role in settling the crisis in the Arab country.

“But the problem is that the Islamic Republic’s solution differs from the one the US intends to present, and that is why the Americans do not like to see Iran participate in Geneva II,” the legislator added.

All countries will definitely welcome Iran’s “realistic, democratic and political” resolution to the Syria crisis, Naqavi Hosseini said, stressing that Washington is fearful that its own approaches to resolve the issue would fail.
He said the US solution would be outvoted by that of Iran, adding, “They (Americans) fear their solution will fail [to win support].”
“Other countries should come to the conclusion that they cannot settle the problem without Iran,” the MP noted.

Speaking at a news conference in New York on Monday, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Iran should be invited to the international conference aimed at finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi told media on December 20 that Iran's participation in the Syria peace conference has not been decided yet due to the US opposition.

The UN has set January 22, 2014, as the opening date for the talks.
