Syria has criticized the United States as a “one-eyed pirate” after Washington slammed Damascus for the airstrikes on the northern city of Aleppo.

"The White House is ignoring the crimes committed by the terrorists," Syria’s official SANA news agency said on Tuesday, referring to foreign-backed militants fighting against the government of president Bashar al-Assad.

"Meanwhile, it [White House] condemns what it describes as incessant aerial attacks by Syrian government forces in Aleppo," the agency also said.
"Washington is a pirate that only looks with one eye. In the areas named by the White House... all you have is groups of Saudis, Qataris and Chechens," it added.
The Syrian military has conducted air strikes on militant-held areas of Aleppo over the past 10 days, killing scores of people.

On December 23, Assad said in a meeting with a delegation of academics, researchers and activists from Australia that Syria is being confronted by a major offensive led by Takfiri extremists.

"This is terrorism without limits, an international scourge that could strike anywhere and anytime," he said, slamming Western countries, who "behave with duplicity and act according to their selfish interests, without understanding the reality or nature" of the Syrian conflict.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. According to reports, Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the turmoil that has gripped Syria for over two years.

On December 10, the Foreign Policy magazine reported that more than 5,000 foreign militants are fighting against the government, adding the figure is “higher than any previous conflict in the modern history of the Muslim world.”

The report also warned of a series of consequences, including the strengthening of “radicals” in their home countries and “extremists linked to al-Qaeda terror network in Syria.”
