ICRC underlines Iran's stability, vows to expand cooperation

16 Dec 2013 - 17:03

TEHRAN (FNA)- Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) representative office in Tehran Olivier Martin underscored Iran's stability and security, and pledged to bolster the committee's cooperation with Iran on the issue of soldiers Missed in Action (MIA) in the Iraq-Iran war (1980-1988).

Martin, in a press conference in Tehran on Sunday afternoon, called Iran a country with stability and said it is different from other neighboring countries.

He added that the ICRC has a plan for more interactions with Iran for the year 2014.

He went on to say that cooperation with the governments of Iran and Iraq on the issues of war and the disappeared is on the agenda of the committee.

Among main approaches of the ICRC in year 2014 would be continuation of cooperation with its principal partner in Iran, particularly Iran's Red Crescent Society.

Last Monday, Official in Charge of MIA of the Red Cross Office in Tehran Ann Muller voiced her satisfaction with the trend of cooperation between Iran and Iraq in exchanging the bodies of soldiers killed in 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war.

“The Red Cross provides its techniques for further interaction between Iran and Iraq for searching for and finding the bodies,” she added.

Early in May, The high-level representatives of Iran and Iraq met in Geneva, Switzerland, under the auspices of the ICRC and followed up on the progress and results achieved by a tripartite committee in its efforts to clarify the fate of the soldiers MIA (those missing in action) of 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War.

Hundreds of thousands of Iranian civilians and soldiers lost their lives in the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war. The bodies of around 7,000 soldiers were never found.

Over the past two decades, the Iranian government has launched various search operations to locate the remains of Iranians and Iraqis who went missing during the war.

The ICRC had pledged to provide financial assistance to Iran to keep the search operations going.
