Iranian, Turkish universities to present literary seminars

Two Iranian and Turkish universities are planning to hold joint literary conferences on the contemporary poets Mohammad Hossein Shahriar and Abdurrahim Karakoc.
Organized by Iran’s Shahriar International Research Foundation and Turkey’s Yunus Emre Cultural Center in Tehran, the confabs will be held during separate programs.

Iran is to host the first conference at the University of Tehran on December 28, while Ankara University will hold the second round of program in March 2014.

Many literary figures and scholars are slated to take part in both galas to review the life and works of the poets.

Seyyed Mohammad Hossein Behjat-Tabrizi, known as Shahriar, was born in 1906 and is considered one of the greatest literary figures of contemporary Iran.

Shahriar was the first Iranian to write poetry in Azeri language and his most famous poem Heydar Babaya Salam, known by many as one of the best modern poems in the language, has been adapted into a few plays.

Published in 1954, the poem is about a mountain where the poet spent his childhood and has been translated into more than 30 languages.

Shahriar died on September 18, 1988, and the day was named as Iran's National Day of Persian Literature and Poetry.

Abdurrahim Karakoc (1932-2012) was a Turkish poet, author and Journalist who penned many literary works such as satirical poems.

Wisdom Wash Ashore  (1965), Hassan Letters  (1964), and To the Friend  (1994) are among his better-known works.
