Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz says five European countries are planning to purchase Iran’s natural gas through a major pipeline that Tehran plans to construct.
On November 26, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu expressed his country’s preparedness to assume the role of an energy corridor for Iran.
In October, Yildiz said Turkey will also raise its gas imports from Iran - currently standing at 10 billion cubic meters a year - if possible.
Yildiz stated that Turkey has seen its energy demand double over the past ten years and that it will double again during the coming ten years.
Iran is Turkey’s second biggest gas supplier after Russia. Turkey uses a significant portion of its imported Iranian natural gas to generate electricity.
